On Saturday, 23-Nov-2024, a webinar on the Mental Health of Children was organized by the counselor of Salwan Public School, Gurugram. The session, held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, was attended by 16 teachers from Salwan Junior School. It was an interesting and informative session that aimed to equip educators with essential tools and insights to better support the mental well-being of students.
The counselor emphasized the critical role educators play in identifying and addressing mental health challenges among children. The session aligned with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, highlighting the importance of holistic development, including mental health, in the education system.
Key topics covered during the webinar included the impact of hormonal imbalances—specifically Dopamine, GABA, and Serotonin—on children’s mental health. The counselor also introduced the bio-psychosocial model, which explains the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors in mental illness. Additionally, an introductory overview of behavioral analysis techniques was shared, particularly for addressing maladaptive behaviors, which will be discussed more thoroughly in future sessions.
The session also focused on parenting styles and how they can affect a child’s emotional well-being. It was stressed that well-planned lesson plans are crucial in preventing behavioral and emotional issues. Educators were encouraged to focus on developing resilience in children and to recognize and accommodate different learning styles to create a more inclusive environment.
A significant part of the session was dedicated to positive reinforcement techniques, including the token system, which can be a powerful tool in promoting desirable behaviors among students. The counselor also suggested creating a small group, such as a “May I Help You” team, consisting of 4-5 teachers to whom students could turn to share their thoughts and feelings, fostering a supportive environment.
Looking ahead, the counselor will be sharing a set of inventory lesson plans designed for use in the school’s mental health program. These lesson plans can be integrated into value education classes, helping educators incorporate mental health awareness into their teaching practices.
Overall, the webinar provided valuable insights and practical strategies, leaving the educators better equipped to support their students’ mental health and create a nurturing and holistic learning environment. The next session will focus on Different types of learners and how to engage and include all students effectively in the learning process.
This initiative is a step towards promoting mental health awareness within educational settings, ultimately fostering healthier, more resilient learners.
