Assessment for Classes Nursery to II

Holistic Assessment Policy Aligned with NEP 2020 for Early Childhood Development

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, our school has embraced a transformative approach to assessment in the foundational years. Our focus is on holistic development, ensuring that every child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth is nurtured. By involving all stakeholders—teachers, parents, peers, and the children themselves—in the assessment and reporting process, we aim to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

Holistic Development: The Core Principle

The NEP 2020 emphasizes that assessments should not be limited to academic milestones but should encompass a child’s overall development. We have designed our assessment framework to reflect this vision, recognizing that each child is unique and progresses at their own pace. Our assessments focus on:

  1. Cognitive Skills: Numeracy, literacy, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
  2. Socio-Emotional Growth: Collaboration, empathy, self-regulation, and communication skills.
  3. Physical Well-Being: Motor skills, physical health, and fitness.
  4. Creativity and Aesthetic Sensibilities: Artistic expression, innovation, and appreciation for cultural diversity.

Assessment as a Continuous and Collaborative Process

Our school views assessment as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. We follow formative assessment methods, such as observations, project work, storytelling, role-playing, and teacher-child interactions.

For Class I & II Summative assessments are minimal, focusing on qualitative insights rather than quantitative grading.

Key stakeholders involved in the reporting cycle:

  1. Teachers: Teachers are the primary facilitators of learning and assessment. They observe, document, and analyse each child’s progress through anecdotal records, developmental checklists, and portfolios. These insights are shared with parents to provide a comprehensive view of the child’s growth.
  2. Parents: Parents play a critical role in supporting their child’s development. Our school organizes regular parent-teacher meetings, workshops, and orientation sessions to ensure they are actively involved in the assessment process. We encourage parents to provide input and share observations about their child’s behaviour and learning at home.
  3. Peers: Peer assessment is introduced in a simple, age-appropriate manner, encouraging children to learn from one another. Activities like group discussions, collaborative projects, and peer feedback promote teamwork, empathy, and a sense of responsibility.
  4. Self-Assessment: Even at an early age, self-reflection is encouraged through guided discussions, visual aids, and tools like “smiley charts” or “achievement trees.” This fosters self-awareness, confidence, and an intrinsic motivation to learn.

Reporting Mechanism

Our reporting system reflects the principles of NEP 2020 by focusing on qualitative descriptors rather than grades or marks. Holistic report cards capture:

  • The child’s strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Milestones achieved in each developmental domain.
  • Suggestions for parents and teachers to support further growth.

By adopting this inclusive and holistic assessment framework, our school ensures that every child is supported in their journey of growth and learning. NEP 2020’s vision of fostering joyful, experiential, and meaningful learning drives our policy. We believe that when teachers, parents, and peers collaborate, and when children are empowered to assess themselves, education becomes a transformative experience. Together, we are building a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Assessment for Classes III to V

At Salwan Junior School, we recognize assessment as a critical component of the learning process, aligned with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Our approach emphasizes creating joyous learning spaces by eliminating the pressure of comparative performance. Instead, we focus on nurturing individual growth, fostering curiosity, and enabling students to discover their unique strengths.

Philosophy of Assessment

Assessment in the junior classes (III to V) is guided by the ‘socio constructivist theory.’ This individualistic approach encourages learners to improve their own skills and reflect on their learning journey. The process prioritizes the observation of four interconnected developmental domains:

  • Physical and Motor Skills
  • Language and Communication
  • Cognitive Abilities
  • Social and Emotional Development

The focus is on identifying and nurturing developmental milestones that naturally occur at each stage of learning. By emphasizing existing strengths, we create a supportive and enriching environment for every learner.

Our Assessment Approach

Learning is assessed over time and in context through a system of Ongoing Assessments. This enables us to ensure continuous development and meaningful learning experiences.

Formative and Summative Assessments
  • Formative Assessments: These assessments are conducted regularly and aim to monitor student progress during the learning process. They help identify areas of improvement, encourage self-reflection, and guide teaching strategies to meet individual needs. Formative assessments are integral to building a strong foundation for learning.

  • Summative Assessments: Conducted at the end of specific learning periods, these assessments evaluate the overall understanding and mastery of concepts. They provide insights into student achievement and contribute to the comprehensive assessment of each child’s progress.

Key Features of Our Assessment System
  1. Holistic Skill Development: Supports cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills to foster well-rounded growth.
  2. De-Emphasis on Rote Memorization: Shifts focus to understanding and critical thinking rather than rote learning.
  3. Continuous Evaluation: Integrates evaluation seamlessly into the teaching-learning process through regular formative practices.
  4. Data-Driven Improvement: Uses insights from assessments to refine teaching strategies and improve learning outcomes.
  5. Student-Centric Decisions: Empowers teachers to make informed decisions tailored to individual learners’ needs.
  6. Transformation of Learning: Promotes a student-centric environment that nurtures creativity, problem-solving, and reflection.
