Azadi Ka amrit Mahotsav (Day 2)-Karigar Mela

Empowering craftsmen, nurturing cultural legacy

Craftsmanship and sustainability go hand in hand in context of rich crafts, traditions and cultural heritage of India. Conserving and nurturing this rural heritage is the foundation for sustainable economic growth as it ensures livelihood to rural residents in their traditional habitat and increase the pride and self-confidence of the entire community. India at large has a rural foundation and preserving its heritage becomes our responsibility as well.

To promote the local artisans and Iiprovide them with opportunities to present their work midst larger groups, Salwan Education Trust in collaboration with Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development (ITRHD), initiated #Savetheartists campaign. This campaign was woven with the pre-independence celebrations wherein these artisans visited all Salwan Schools to showcase the richness and diversity of handicrafts, handlooms and fabrics of India along with their numerous craft work. Salwan Junior School presented their work through an exhibition cum PTM on Tuesday, 2nd August 2022 in the school premises.

From pottery to weaved goods, the artisans from Azamgarh presented their wealth of work ranging from Rs. 1500 to 15000 that showcased the splendid handcrafted goods and products that truly displayed their fine craftsmanship and creativity. The exhibition was organised with the objective of providing a great platform to our young Salwanians and their Parents to interact with the skilled artisans who have expertise in traditional crafts making skills so as to take the legacy forward to preserve their art forms. The curious parents and excited students all gathered up around the stalls to witness the eye-catching decorative materials including the silk dupattas and banarasi sarees from Azamgarh, Mubarakpur Resham Nagri. Further, it was a delightful treat for the visitors who got an opportunity to witness the live potter’s wheel wherein the black pottery was showcased and made in fine textured clay in front of the audiences. The hard work, dedication and efforts of these artisans was reflected in each piece of art and was well appreciated by all.
